Bratwurst with Caramelized Onions and Cheese Sauce

Ingredients

Caramelized Onions

  • 3 Medium Yellow Onions (2 Lbs.)
  • 2 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • Salt And Black Pepper

Cheddar Cheese Sauce

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Flour
  • 1/8 Tsp Garlic Powder
  • 3/4 Cup Milk
  • 5 Oz. (1 1/4 Cups) Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
  • Salt And Black Pepper
  • 1 Tbsp Spicy Brown Mustard

Brats

  • 5 Bratwursts
  • 5 Brat Or Hoagie Buns

How to Make

For The Onions:

1. Cut the onions into strips 2. Melt butter in a heavy stainless steel or cast-iron pan over medium heat. Add olive oil and onions, and toss to coat with butter mixture. 3. Cook 40 - 45 minutes, reducing heat to medium-low, stirring occasionally until onions are golden brown. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

For The Brats:

1. Preheat a grill over medium-low heat. 2. Grill bratwurst for 15 - 20 minutes, turning frequently until browned and internal temperature reaches 160° F. 3. Place bun face down on grill and toast for 1-2 minutes.

For The Cheese Sauce:

1. In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. 2. Add flour and garlic powder and cook and stir constantly for approximately 1 minute. 3. Slowly stir in milk. 4. Cook until mixture begins to lightly boil and thicken, stirring consistently. 5. Reduce heat to low, add cheddar, and stir until melted and well incorporated. 6. Add mustard and season with salt to taste.

Assembly:

assemble, place one brat on a toasted bun. Top with onions and cheese sauce, serve warm. Optional Toppings: Pickles, Relish, Mustard, Cole Slaw, Pickled Onions, Sauerkraut
